OPTICAL CONTACT ANGLE MEASUREMENT


Contact Angle Measuring Device, is sometimes known as Goniometer, is an instrument for determination of contact angle between the dropped liquid drop and the solid surface by optical analysis. The resulting contact angle values can be used to analyse the solid’s wetting properties with the liquid.

The property of surface free energy of the solid can be determined by having measured the contact angles from multiple test liquids, and further analysed with software for work of adhesion for different liquids.

The application of contact angle measuring instrument are very useful in many industries and research fields, for example surface finishing and treatment, surface coatings, cleaning agents, chemical dispersions as well as paints and varnishes. Some of the common analysis :

  • • Contact angle measurement in static or dynamic mode, as well as wettability analysis on solids using the sessile drop method.
  • • Determination of surface energy of solids.
  • • Optical analysis of surface tension and interfacial tension using the pendant drop method.
